ENGIE wants to be carbon neutral

Bratislava, 1 April 2021 The world is facing a climate crisis. Is it still possible to avert the inevitable? To slow climate change? Even without an answer to this question, it is clear that our common task and effort should be to at least try. Whether at the level of individuals, companies, corporations or states. The ENGIE Group, one of the world’s leading suppliers of energy and energy solutions, attaches strategic importance to this task. It has also expressed this in its raison d’être, which was adopted at the 2020 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders: “Our intention is to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral economy by reducing energy consumption and through environmentally friendly solutions. Our goal connects the company, its employees, clients and shareholders, aligning economic performance with a positive impact on people and the planet.” The ENGIE Group has been active in the fight against climate change for 15 years. In 2015, it implemented a new action plan that was aligned with international targets and commitments (e.g. including the COP21 Paris Agreement). Since then, it has succeeded in significantly reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, mainly thanks to radical strategic changes, focusing on low-carbon activities, green energy and reducing consumption by its customers.

What else has ENGIE achieved in this area?

  • More than 800 renewable energy sources in its portfolio
  • 19% increase in renewable energy generation capacity from 2016
  • 59% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2016
  • 72% less coal in power generation since 2015
  • €466 million – investment and spending related to environmental protection in 2020

ENGIE has achieved SBTi (Science Based Targets) Certification for the new 2030 targets, which are key to the Group’s transition to carbon neutrality.

What are ENGIE’s goals for 2030?

  • 58% renewable energy in its energy mix
  • 52% reduction in CO₂ emissions per kWh of energy produced
  • 35% reduction in water consumption by industrial activities*

In line with its purpose, the international ENGIE Group has set 3 main strategic priorities to help it accelerate the energy transition and achieve carbon neutrality.

  1. Accelerating investment in renewables with an ambitious target to increase renewable energy capacity from 3 to 4 GW per year.
  • Focus on renewable energy development (solar, hydro, wind, biomass) and investment in advanced technologies (offshore wind, biogas, hydrogen).
  1. Increase investment in infrastructure
  • Strengthening and diversifying infrastructure to ensure efficient transmission of energy from the point of generation to the consumer.
  1. Focus on client solutions
  • Particularly in the field of low-carbon energy generation, energy infrastructure and related services, providing sophisticated, integrated and comprehensive solutions for cities, communities and industries. Core activities in this area include urban heating and cooling, decentralised power generation, energy efficient solutions, smart cities, green mobility and engineering.

And to make sure that it doesn’t just pay lip service to strategic intentions, ENGIE regularly evaluates its projects and activities that are aimed at combating climate change and reducing its carbon footprint. We therefore conclude with an overview of some of the achievements it has made in this area in 2020.

  • + 3 GW of renewable generation capacity commissioned
    • Almost +2 GW/USA, +300 MW/Mexico, +205 MW/Norway, +200 MW/France, +169 MW/Spain, +144 MW/India
