Vrakuňa prepares for greener and more efficient heating

TERMMING, a member of the ENGIE Group, in cooperation with the city district of Vrakuňa is preparing a major project of modernization of centralized heat supply (CZT). The aim is to increase the efficiency of the system, expand the use of renewable energy sources and bring a more stable and environmentally friendly heat supply to residents.

Financing of the project

The €15 million modernisation will be financed from TERMMING’s own resources (15%) and a subsidy from the Modernisation Fund, which can cover up to 85% of the investment.

Thanks to this support, it will be possible to renovate the technology with minimal financial burden on the residents and the district. The investment will translate into new infrastructure that will serve the residents of Vrakune for many years.

Modernizing

The modernization will affect not only the boiler house for burning wood chips on Železničná Street, but also the entire hot water system, which supplies several residential buildings.

Part of the solution is to replace the old heat distribution system with a modern two-pipe system, which will enable more efficient energy transfer and reduce heat loss. The project will construct 10 km of new pipelines and upgrade 2 km of existing pipelines. This will result in higher reliability and longer service life, which will ultimately translate into more stable heat prices for residents.

An important part of the project is also the renovation of thermal-technical equipment in residential buildings. The outdated heat exchanger stations will be replaced by modern heat transfer stations (OST), which represent the latest standard in thermal technology. A total of 81 new stations will be installed in Vrakuni and 18 existing stations will be renovated.

Schedule of works

The project is currently in the phase of preparatory work and processing of building permits. Implementation is expected to start in 2027 and completion is expected in 2028. During construction, works will be coordinated to ensure that heat supply to households is not interrupted.

Benefits for residents

Upgrading the system will bring direct improvements in comfort for residents. Hot water will be prepared in the house, so it will heat up faster and be cleaner. In addition, each house will be able to adjust the heating and water heating to its own needs, within the technical possibilities of the system, of course.

“The financing of the entire investment is covered by our company. This means that residents do not have to take out a loan or increase their contributions to the repair fund. The more efficient production of heat from wood chips and the modernisation of the distribution systems will stabilise the price of heat for households and reduce the consumption of primary energy resources,” explains Miroslav Pajchl, director of the ENGIE Services heat production and distribution department.

A common step towards a sustainable Vrakuni

The project will also increase the share of renewable energy sources in heat generation and reduce dependence on natural gas. Together, we will be able to save around 3,700 tonnes of CO₂ per year,” concludes Miroslav Pajchl.

The investment in modernisation is an important step towards a greener and more energy efficient Vrakuni. The joint project of TERMMING and the district proves that sustainable solutions can be economically viable and at the same time benefit all residents.
